Euro holds gains against British Pound after weaker UK Retail Sales data

2026-08-21

The EUR/GBP currency pair held its modest gains, trading around the 0.8570 level during Friday's early European session. The momentum followed the release of disappointing UK retail sales data, which fell short of market expectations and underscored ongoing domestic economic challenges in the United Kingdom. Consequently, the British Pound faced renewed selling pressure against its major counterparts. The softer retail sales figures have heightened expectations that the Bank of England may adopt a more dovish monetary policy stance to support economic growth. Lower consumer spending reflects persistent inflation headwinds and elevated borrowing costs affecting UK households. In contrast, the Euro showed relative resilience, benefiting from the Sterling's broad weakness across the foreign exchange market. Traders and institutional investors will now look ahead to upcoming central bank communications and PMI releases from both the Eurozone and the UK. Relative economic performance and yield differentials between the Bank of England and the European Central Bank will remain the primary drivers for EUR/GBP in the near term.
