2026-03-09

Saudi ports reported a significant 20.9% year-on-year increase in container throughput to 668,000 TEUs in February 2024, according to a statement by the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI). Transshipment containers rose 28.1% to 155,330 TEUs, while inbound containers grew 26.2% to 272,210 and outbound containers increased 11.5% to 240,350. This marks a sharp recovery compared to February 2023, reflecting improved global trade flows and Saudi Arabia's infrastructure investments. The surge in container activity signals stronger economic momentum in the Kingdom, which could boost related sectors like logistics, shipping, and port services. For traders, the data may indicate increased demand for port-related equities and infrastructure stocks. The performance of MAWANI, a key player in Saudi's port operations, could see renewed investor interest as the government accelerates Vision 2030 projects like NEOM and the Red Sea Project. Looking ahead, sustained growth in port throughput could support Saudi Arabia's goal to become a global trade hub. Investors should monitor quarterly reports from MAWANI and regional infrastructure spending plans. The development of new ports like Jeddah Islamic Port and Ras Al-Khair Port may further drive long-term growth in the sector.
